All-Time Peak in Twitch Streams Caused by Solar Storm
In a stunning display of cosmic opportunism, a massive solar storm that erupted from the sun on Tuesday coincided with an unprecedented surge in Twitch streams, as thousands of speedrunners across the globe rushed to their consoles and PCs, hoping to exploit a rare glitch that could potentially shave off seconds or even minutes from their records.
The glitch, known as an impossible bitflip wrongwarp, occurs when a high-energy particle from the solar storm flips a single bit in the game’s memory, causing the game to warp the player to a different location, usually closer to the end of the game. The glitch is extremely rare and unpredictable, and can only be detected by using specialized hardware and software.
However, that did not deter the speedrunning community, who saw the solar storm as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to achieve unbeatable times in their games. Many of them abandoned their normal lives and routines, and dedicated themselves to streaming non-stop, hoping to catch the elusive glitch on camera.
“I’ve been playing Super Mario 64 for 12 hours straight, and I’m not stopping until I get the impossible bitflip wrongwarp,” said one streamer, who goes by the username xXxMarioMasterxXx. “This is my chance to get the world record for the 120-star category, and I’m not letting it slip away.”
Another streamer, who specializes in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, claimed that he had already witnessed the glitch twice, but failed to capitalize on it. “The first time, I was in the Deku Tree, and the impossible bitflip wrongwarp sent me to Ganon’s Castle. But I didn’t have the Master Sword, so I couldn’t damage Ganon. The second time, I was in the Fire Temple, and the impossible bitflip wrongwarp sent me to the credits. But the game didn’t register that I had completed the game, so it didn’t count as a valid run. It was so frustrating.”
The solar storm, which is expected to last for another day or two, has also caused some problems for the speedrunners, such as power outages, internet disruptions, and equipment malfunctions. Some streamers have reported that their consoles or PCs have crashed, frozen, or corrupted their save files due to the solar storm.
Despite these setbacks, the speedrunners remain optimistic and determined to achieve their goals. “The solar storm is a blessing and a curse,” said one streamer, who plays Sonic the Hedgehog 2. “It can either make or break your run. But that’s the thrill of speedrunning. You never know what’s going to happen. And that’s why I love it.”
